In Memory Of

Sheryl Palmer 4/3/57 - 5/3/08

Our dear friend and faithful volunteer, Sheryl Palmer, recently lost her battle with breast cancer. She was irreplaceable. Sheryl is a long-time friend of founders Shirley Moore and David Bernier as well as a close friend of many Save A Dog volunteers, including director Valerie Alterio. Sheryl was the Web designer and implementer of our Web site as well as many Web sites for businesses in the Boston area and in her current residence of Naples, FL. There are no words to express such a tremendous loss. While living in MA she was a regular helper with the dog chores and Shirley's right arm and confidante. After she moved to Naples four years ago she continued to carry the lion's share of the work on the Web site as well as answeing emails and anything she could do to help the cause from a distance. After hurricane Katrina she (on a moment's notice) fostered a mother Rottweiler and her litter of newborn pups until we were able to transport them to New England when they were monster puppies at nine weeks old. Sheryl never complained, no matter how labor-intesive the work was. She gave a quick turn-around to many last-minute Web requests and was always "Johnny on the spot" no matter how many other projects she was juggling.

Sheryl, there is just no replacing you. You will leave a legacy behind and a big hole in our organization.

After Sheryl slipped away we lowered her bed and her Rotti boy, Logan, came over and licked her hand. He was her mama's boy right til the end, never leaving her side and anyone who wanted to tend to her had to deal with him first. When the Chaplin asked if anyone wanted to say a few words about Sheryl, Logan stepped right up and started barking in the air, letting us all know how he felt about her. Sheryl is survived by her husband, Vincent Difini of Naples, FL; her son, Mark Huffam of Troy, NY; her father, George E. Palmer of Marlboro, MA; her sisters, Nancy Palmer of Holden, MA and Laura Palmer of Southboro, MA; and her brother, James Palmer of Hudson, MA..

We are having a Memorial Service for Sheryl on May 10th at 2 PM. We are inviting all her friends, admirers, and family to:

Allora Ristorante,
139 Lakeside Avenue,
Route 20,
Marlborough, MA

to celebrate her life and her work. Please feel free to join us. In lieu of flowers we are asking that donations be made to Sheryl's Fund at Save A Dog, PO Box 1108, Framingham, MA 01701. We are creating Sheryl's corner, which will be a sitting area and garden for our friends and volunteers as a tribute to Sheryl.

Save A Dog, Inc. is an all breed dog rescue and adoption agency. We take in dogs from high-volume shelters and thus save them from being put to sleep. We also take in dogs whose owners no longer want or who have been abandoned.

We incorporated as a 501c3 nonprofit in 1999 and we were the first dog rescue group in the Boston Metrowest area to bring in dogs from states that have an over-population problem. We use foster homes so that we can better evaluate the dog's personalities. We temperament test the dogs and we try to make the best match for applicant and dog. We developed a health and temperament protocol and quarantined our dogs long before it was it was state-mandated.

What sets us apart from all the dog rescue groups who have recently sprung up? We are not about rescuing puppies to make a quick buck. We will not turn down special needs dogs and we'll spend whatever it costs to save dogs who are truly in need. If we are going to bring in dogs from out of state, we choose a mix of adult dogs slated for euthanasia as well as adolescent dogs who were abandoned when they outgrew their cuteness. We love working with people who want to "save a dog" as opposed to people who just want a cute puppy. We believe in educating our adoption community and will send you home with extensive instructions on how to care for your new dog or pup as well as recommendations for health and training. We have you sign an adoption contract that ensures the dog will never again end up in a shelter. We spay and neuter the dogs prior to placement. Our dogs are up to date on vaccinations, but we don't over-vaccinate as we know that this can lead to immune deficiency problems and we will educate you about that. We use holistic care and homeopathy as our primary medical protocol. We use positive reinforcement training for our dogs and we require that you obedience train your dog using positive methods. We work with a select few out-of-state shelters who we trust to give us healthy dogs that are friendly and adoptable. We have a good relationship with these shelters and we help them out with donations for their special needs and hardship cases.

If you would like to meet our rescued dogs, please fill out an application or come to one of our local Meet and Greet events, listed on the Events page. Also, if you fill out an application, you can make a private appointment to see the dogs. Filling out an application is the best way to express your interest as the dogs require our undivided attention during the day, hence we tend to read emails after the dogs go to bed.

Save A Dog's Capital Campaign

The time has come for Save A Dog to have a place of our own! The "48 hour quarantine rule" for out of state dogs has brought us to the point where we need to have a building. We have a very successful foster program and we plan on continuing that program, but we also need a building in which to quarantine and evaluate incoming dogs. We also need an educational room where people can learn about successful pet ownership and also a place where people can come and view our dogs for adoption.

We are in the process of searching for a place that we can renovate, a rent-to-own that will allow us to have a place while we're raising the funds to build or renovate a rent-to-own. We're so grateful to have many supporters and followers all these years and we are hopeful and confident that you will continue your support by contributing to our Capital Campaign so that we can continue our rescue efforts without hindrance.
