  Simon, 10 years Male Maltese
Simon

Hi, I'm Simon, a 10 year old neutered male Maltese looking for a loving home. I was rescued with Hyacinth and depend on her as I can be shy when I first meet you. It would be great if we could get adopted together, but it's not a requirement. I would do best with another dog to help me build confidence. I'm a little guy at only 6 lbs. so it's a big world. I'm in a foster home and will be brought to the shelter to meet you once you send in your application. Foster mom writes, Simon knows his name and is the sweetest little guy with a big personality. He definitely thinks he's much bigger than he is! Once Simon gets to know and trust you, he becomes incredibly devoted. He'll faithfully follow you from room to room, and whenever you sit down, he'll be right beside you. If he's not following you, you'll usually find him perched somewhere he can keep an eye on you. At bedtime, Simon likes to spend some time above your pillow before burrowing under the blankets to sleep with his face tucked right next to you. Simon is shy with new people and can be startled by sudden movements. The best approach is to let him come to you at his own pace. He will likely take his cues from Hyacinth at first, but in my experience, it only took a few hours for him to realize I was someone he could trust. Because he's still building confidence, Simon is uncomfortable when unfamiliar people lean over him to pet him, whether he's sitting by himself on a chair or curled up on your lap. He does much better if people ignore him at first and allow him to approach on his own. Giving him the choice to initiate the interaction helps him feel safe, and once he realizes someone is kind, he quickly becomes affectionate and loyal. He also doesn't like being picked up unexpectedly. I've been telling him, "I'm going to pick you up," before I do, and while he still gets a little stiff, he seems to be learning that it's okay. I expect he'll continue to gain confidence with patience and consistency in his forever home. Both Hyacinth and Simon love to play, are wonderful in their crates and are looking for a patient, loving home where they can continue to thrive. Both will need dentals which the shelter is covering and for which donations are welcome. Please apply at https://www.saveadog.org/applytoadopt.asp, and the adoption team will get right back to you.
